Audition Notice - Lighten Up
Written by Australia’s own Bollywood leading man, Nicholas Brown (Kites, UnIndian), and stand-up comedy star, Sam McCool (Australia’s Got Talent), Lighten Up is a cross-cultural comedy about racism, love and triumphantly owning your identity.
Lighten Up is a laugh-out-loud comedy that follows the plight of John Green, an Indian Australian man living in the western Sydney suburb of Greystanes. John’s overbearing mother Bronwyn has high hopes for him to procreate with a blonde, white Australian woman and so cleanse the family of any further ‘ethnicity’ in their bloodline. How far is John willing to go in pursuit of love and stardom? One thing is for certain: John is determined to be recognised as ‘true blue’… Or whatever colour it is that Australians are supposed to be.
The production team are looking to cast 3 actors to play multiple roles. Lighten Up is a new work and, as such, actors with an enthusiasm for new the Australian content are encouraged to apply.

Romantic lead role. An Indigenous Australian Woman with dark brown skin. Strong-minded and slightly mischievous. She is a successful businesswoman and encounters John when eyeing competition for her new Indigenous Tour Company for The Rocks. Late 20s - early 30s
John’s little sister (adult to play aged 10). Obsessed with breeding her rare budgies. Strong, versatile actress needed - preferably mixed-race. The role requirements are gender-bending, demanding and strong comic timing is a must. The actress also plays:
- Danno: John’s best mate. Male, redhead. Late 20s - early 30s.
Merle Oberon: The (secretly Anglo-Indian) Hollywood actress from the late 1920s - 1970s.
Heather: An old acquaintance of John’s mother. Anglo-Indian. 50s.
Caucasian, blonde and blue-eyed. John’s girlfriend. Attends Hillsong, but you probably wouldn’t know due to her constant swearing. Cashed-up bogan and slightly rough but refined “Westie”. Gets herself trapped in a game of manipulation by John’s mother, who is trying to make them have a baby (preferably a blonde, blue-eyed one). Need an honest interpretation rather than a caricature. Strong comic timing. Doubles for some minor roles. Late 20s - early 30s
